Legendary high school coach Neubauer dies at 80
He coached Gladbrook to two girls' state titles
and had a 581-155 record.
By JOHN NAUGHTON
Register Staff Writer
02/20/2002

Legendary high school coach Chuck Neubauer, who led girls'
basketball teams to the state tournament in a record five
decades, has died.

Neubauer, who lived in Urbandale and was 80 years old,
died of a stroke Monday night. Services will be held
at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Urbandale.

His remarkable coaching career included back-to-back state
titles at Gladbrook in 1959 and 1960.

Neubauer had a 581-155 record in 32 seasons. His first trip
to state came in 1949 at Guthrie Center. He led West Des
Moines Valley to a runner-up finish in 1965. He retired after
leading Harlan to state three times: in 1979, 1982 and 1985.

Neubauer's coaching motto was hustle.

"If he would ease up on them, the players would say they
wanted the 'old coach' back," Lincoln coach Jerry
Schartner said. "He was always very intense in practice."

He was one of the few coaches to take both boys' and girls'
teams to state. Neubauer led Jamaica to the boys'
tournament in 1956. He also led girls' golf and tennis teams

of Westminster, Colo., daughters Roxanne Lewis of Phoenix
and Denise Hancock of Des Moines.

DENNIS VAN DER HORST

May, 2000 - in Minneapolis.

After his initial diagnosis and
surgery, he took an alternative
treatment approach that was very
unorthodox. It was very successful
at first, but in January of '99
the cancer had reappeared having spread
to his adrenal glands and back.
His condition was considered terminal, and
shortly after Denny and Diane went to
Mexico for two months to try an
experimental treatment.

When this failed, they made a personal
decision to share the news with only
family members. Home hospice was setup,
and there Denny died with his extended
family at his side.
